The Chief Engineer of a cargo ship was arrested for causing marine pollution in the maritime area of Keratsini during refueling.
Yesterday afternoon, the Port Authority of Keratsini was informed about the presence of marine pollution from petroleum products in the maritime area of pier G1 of the port, where a cargo-carrier (Ro-Ro) ship was docked.
The pollution, covering a total area of approximately forty square meters (40 sq.m.), was caused by iridescent petroleum products during the ship’s refueling. Subsequently, the pollution was contained by a specialized anti-pollution team, under the supervision of the Captain and the ship-owning company.
By the 2nd Port Department of Keratsini of the Central Port Authority of Piraeus conducting the preliminary investigation, the departure of the Ro-Ro ship was prohibited, while the ship’s Chief Engineer was arrested.
