According to a recent publication by FAN Transport News, Klaipėda Port is making significant strides in its groundbreaking green hydrogen initiative, a first of its kind for Lithuania and the surrounding region. The arrival of essential equipment marks a pivotal moment for the project aimed at enhancing sustainable energy production.

The successful testing of the newly installed pipeline has propelled developers closer to their ambitious objectives. “This equipment’s arrival signifies a major leap forward in Lithuania’s journey towards energy sustainability,” stated Algis Latakas, Director General of the Klaipėda State Seaport Authority. “Klaipėda is not just discussing green energy; we are actively producing it and integrating it into our operations.”

This development paves the way for new possibilities within both maritime and industrial sectors while positioning Klaipėda as a leader in innovative and eco-friendly solutions.

Set to commence operations next year, the hydrogen production facility will utilize a polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) electrolyzer. Once fully operational, it is expected to generate approximately 127 tonnes of green hydrogen annually. A portion of this output will fuel Lithuania’s first vessel powered by green hydrogen, which is currently under construction.

This initiative falls under the Economic Recovery and Resilience Plan Next Generation Lithuania and receives backing from the European Union’s NextGenerationEU recovery fund. The total investment for this cutting-edge refueling station stands at around €12 million, with EU funds contributing about €6 million.
