Knud E. Hansen has developed a design for three new ferries that will service Orkney’s northern islands, a body of water that places great demands on a robust construction.

The 60-meter-long single-ended ferries will have /battery hybrid machinery consisting of five generators and two Voith Schneider propellers for propulsion.

The new ferries will replace the three current ro-pax ferries, Earl Sigurd, Earl Thorfinn and Varagan.

The ferries are being built for Orkney Ferries, which is owned by Orkney Islands Council, with funds made available by the Scottish government.

The next phase of the replacement program will include a large ferry for the South Isles, plus two smaller vessels for Papa Westray and North Ronaldsay, and for Graemsay and North Hoy.
