Norwegian companies Knutsen NYK Carbon Carriers (KNCC), Vår Energi CCS and Aker Solutions have signed a memorandum of understanding to collaborate on the development of the Trudvang carbon capture and storage (CCS) project in the North Sea.

The project combines KNCC’s shipping expertise with that of offshore engineering firm Aker Solutions and CCS storage solutions from Vår Energi and aims to establish integrated, flexible and commercially viable CO2 transport and storage solutions for European industrial customers.

The Trudvang project is expected to begin with injection volumes of around 2 million metric tons of CO2 per year. Over time, capacity could scale to more than 20 million tons annually.

The project plans to store CO2 in the Utsira Formation, a well-established geological storage site in the North Sea that neighbours the Sleipner field where CO2 has been injected for nearly three decades and gives a high degree of confidence in the long-term reliability of the Trudvang project.

As part of the agreement, the companies will work together to advance technical and commercial aspects of the development and engage with customers, regulators and other stakeholders to strengthen market confidence. The project will also assess direct offshore injection, aiming to streamline operations between CO2 carriers and storage facilities as well as exploring different CO2 transport scenarios, including both medium and elevated pressure solutions. In addition, work will be undertaken on optimising offshore infrastructure, including unmanned platform designs and subsea systems.
