Konecranes to deliver 12 electric RTGs to terminal in Miami

Must read

Delivery is scheduled for July 2023

South Florida Container Terminal (SFCT) has ordered 12 electric rubber-tyred gantry (E-RTG) cranes from Konecranes for its terminal in Miami, as it looks to raise capacity.

In response to recent growth, the facility, which provides access to Latin American and Asian trade routes, has been densifying and expanding its container yard upwards instead of out.

The operator is more than doubling capacity, converting its primary container handling equipment to RTGs to manage higher container stacks.

The 12 new units are powered by electricity for clean, economical and efficiency operation while they will also be fitted with a diesel engine for backup, stack changing and maintenance.

Remote operation of the RTGs is carried out with the Finnish company’s remote operating stations (ROSs), and the fleet is run via a fleet management system.

Alan Garcia, sales manager, ports solutions, Americas, at Konecranes, said that the fleet of remote operation RTGs would offer high reliability and performance levels while lowering fuel costs and reducing emissions.

The machines also have cabins for manual operation along with DGPS auto-steering.

Konecranes noted that where it is not possible for carbon emissions from manufacturing to be minimised, they will be compensated with reforestation up to the point of handover to the customer.
