What is the timeline for the full operation of the Alexandroupolis FSRU?

We have communicated the timeline for the restart of the Alexandroupolis FSRU. The gradual restart begins on August 15, with the available regasification capacity at the FSRU being at a maximum of 25% of its nominal technical capacity, while by October 1 we will have fully returned. For those not familiar with natural gas issues, October 1 marks the start of a gas commercial year. Gas years start on October 1 and end on September 30 of the following year. Consequently, we want to be ready for the start of the new year.

What is the project’s impact on the local community of Alexandroupolis? How is the local economy strengthened through the presence of Gastrade?

This specific project has had a positive impact on the local community of Alexandroupolis over time, since we secured the first licenses in 2011. Until now, we have had a very positive response from the local community and we are in continuous dialogue with local bodies. This dialogue is conducted primarily institutionally and not in a fragmented manner. Mainly with the Municipality of Alexandroupolis, regardless of the current leadership, but also with the Region of Eastern Macedonia-Thrace. We try to contribute to the broader development of the city, in open communication with the Municipality and the Region. We want to be a living and useful part of the city’s social fabric. Do not forget that we are talking about a sensitive area, in which in previous decades many productive businesses ceased their operations.

The Alexandroupolis FSRU constitutes a “shield” of national security for the wider region. From an economic perspective, it has direct economic benefits, as it has created over 100 jobs both on the unit and at the naval base we have developed in the port of Alexandroupolis. The goal is to enhance local employment through the training programs we promote.

Beyond the above, the indirect benefits include accommodation services, supply and maintenance of mechanical equipment, but also the fact that business activity is developing in the city with the Alexandroupolis FSRU as the spearhead. Our project has attracted other energy projects, such as the New Combined Cycle Power Generation Unit in the Industrial Area of Alexandroupolis, which will also create new jobs. These are combined with the upgrade of the importance of the port of Alexandroupolis and its development prospects. All this activity has positive commercial effects, which are reflected, among other things, in real estate development. Alexandroupolis is the city with the highest real estate growth. In conclusion, an ecosystem has been created in Alexandroupolis with the support of both EU and state funds aimed at the Greek region.
