Lloyd’s Register (LR) has launched Fire (C, Risk), a new risk-based notation to strengthen fire safety on container ships.
The notation is supported by guidance to help shipowners, designers, and operators choose best-practice measures tailored to each vessel’s fire risk profile.
Introduced in the July 2025 update to LR’s Rules and Regulations, it is the first to apply the ShipRight Risk-Based Certification (RBC) methodology to container ship fire safety. The framework enables customised safety enhancements from design through to operations, while also advancing LR’s wider goals in innovation, digitalisation, and data-driven design.
Gabriele Sancin, LR’s Risk Notation Technical Lead, said: “There are many ways to improve container ship fire safety, from advanced detection to smart suppression technologies. Fire (C, Risk) ensures effective solutions are selected from proven best practice to reduce risks to crew, cargo, and operations.”
The notation and guidance are now available in the latest LR Rules and Regulations.
