A.P. Moller – Maersk (Maersk) has officially opened its largest contract logistics facility in Asia Pacific, the Maersk Mega Distribution Centre (DC) in Malaysia. This significant investment boosts Maersk’s regional warehouse footprint by more than 30% in the country.
The Mega DC, strategically located in Shah Alam, spans a total floor area of nearly 180,000 square metres and offers 100,000 pallet positions. As a multi-client facility, it is purpose-built to handle a wide range of commodities, including fast-moving consumer goods, food and beverage items, footwear, and apparel.
The facility’s location provides direct connectivity to major highways, including the North-South Expressway (PLUS), ELITE Highway, and Shah Alam Expressway (KESAS). This ensures seamless access to key industrial zones, urban centers, Port Klang, and Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA), optimizing transit times for customers. The Mega DC also maintains efficient links to the Port of Tanjung Pelepas, Maersk’s key transshipment hub port in Asia.
The Mega DC is positioned as an important hub for fast and reliable distribution across Asia Pacific. It connects cargo arriving from overseas ports and airports directly to retailers and consumers through integrated warehousing and last-mile delivery. Daily trucking links major Malaysian cities like Ipoh, Penang, Johor, Malacca, and Kota Bharu, while flexible sea, air, and land options provide efficient access to East Malaysia and wider Asian markets.
The facility marks one of Maersk’s most significant milestone investments in Asia Pacific and stands among its largest contract logistics sites globally. KS Chang, Head of Maersk Contract Logistics Asia Pacific, stated that the hub reinforces the company’s integrated capabilities to deliver reliable, flexible supply chains and modern, automated solutions that will help customers scale and reach local consumers more effectively.
The facility is equipped with several state-of-the-art automation systems to ensure faster order fulfillment, shorter lead times, and improved order accuracy by minimizing human error. These advanced solutions include:
Additional technology features support high-performance logistics:
The facility offers both bonded and non-bonded warehouse storage, with Customs officers available on-site to ensure speedier /export clearances and reduce cargo dwell time. A wide range of value-added services, such as tagging, labeling, re-packing, returns management, and quality control, are also available.
The Maersk Mega DC has achieved Green Building Index (GBI) Gold and LEED Gold certification. Its sustainable features, which reduce energy and water usage, include solar panel rooftop installations, smart LED lighting, and rainwater harvesting solutions. Comprehensive safety features, such as advanced forklift safety systems and robust fire protection, are also integrated.
Elaine Low, Area Managing Director, Southeast Asia, Maersk, noted that with shared resources within this multi-client facility, Maersk can deliver enhanced cost-efficiency and operational agility, empowering customers to scale their warehousing and distribution seamlessly, especially during peak demand periods.
YB Anthony Loke, Minister of Transport Malaysia, commented that the opening of this facility aligns with Malaysia’s Logistics and Trade Facilitation Masterplan, further boosting the broader logistics and supply chain landscape and bringing the nation closer to becoming the ‘Logistics Gateway to Asia.’
