On December 3, 2025, Hirtshals Havn will host a major emergency exercise, where Nordjyllands Politi, Nordjyllands Beredskab, Beredskabsstyrelsen Nordjylland and Region Nordjylland will collaborate to test their response in a major, unforeseen incident.
The exercise, named Exercise Tordenskjold, aims to strengthen the collaboration between the authorities and train their ability to handle complex situations in an efficient manner. The exercise will not affect ferry operations at the port.
“Tordenskjold is an important exercise in how authorities collaborate. In a situation where multiple authorities must act quickly and in a coordinated manner, it is essential that we know each other’s procedures and workflows. By training this in a realistic environment, we not only test our technical skills, but also our ability to handle the human and logistical challenges that arise in a major incident,” says Morten Haack, Exercise Leader and Police Assistant from Nordjyllands Politi.
The exercise will take place at Containerkajen 4 at Hirtshals Havn, one of Denmark’s most important port connections, during the period from 5 PM to 9 PM, but activity may also be seen before and after this time frame.
There will be a buildup of vehicles and partial roadblocks in the port area, and emergency sirens may be heard during the exercise.
If you need to board a ferry or disembark during the relevant time period, simply follow the signage in the area.
The exercise will give Hirtshals Havn the opportunity to test their emergency plans and ensure they are equipped to handle any emergencies that could arise in the busy port. Hirtshals Havn plays a central role in Denmark’s import and export, and both cargo and passengers are transported every day through the logistics hub – which makes it even more important to have a well-functioning emergency response in case of unforeseen incidents.
“Hirtshals Havn is a critical hub for both trade and transport, and an emergency exercise like this is important to ensure that all parties can react quickly and effectively if an accident occurs. We train in handling both fire, chemical spills and other major incidents that can occur in a port environment. The collaboration between the authorities is therefore a cornerstone of the exercise,” says Klavs Bojsen, Emergency Inspector at Nordjyllands Beredskab.
