Aziz Yıldırım, the former president of Fenerbahçe Spor Kulübü and owner of Dearsan Shipyard, had donated a research vessel for the earthquake research center MATAM established within Istanbul Teknik Üniversitesi (İTÜ).

Prof. Dr. Cenk Yaltırak, a faculty member of İTÜ, had paid the 70 thousand dollar VAT for the 350 thousand dollar research vessel.

Signatures were made to put the research vessel Sermet into operation.

Prof. Dr. Hasan Mandal, the Rector of Istanbul Teknik Üniversitesi, announced the development with the words: “We have achieved a major stage for the Marmara Active Fault Hazard and Risk Application and Research Center (MATAM)”.

In his statement, Prof. Dr. Mandal said, “Our research vessel named Sermet, which was donated to İTÜ through the valuable contributions of Mr. Aziz Yıldırım and the Yaltırak family, will add new strength to our scientific studies to be conducted in the depths of the Marmara Sea. We have signed for this important step together with our professor Prof. Dr. Cenk Yaltırak at the Istanbul Regional Port Authority.”

The continuation of Hasan Mandal’s statement is as follows: “RV Sermet will allow us to research the earthquake hazards and risks posed by the active faults in the Marmara Sea more comprehensively.

I extend my gratitude to all our academics, primarily Prof. Dr. Cenk Yaltırak, who contributed greatly to this process, and our valuable donor Mr. Aziz Yıldırım.

As İTÜ, we will continue to work with determination for a disaster-resilient future by strengthening our scientific production with an understanding of social responsibility.”
