A competitive advantage of Greek shipping is that at the helm of the Union of Greek Shipowners is Melina Travlou. In 2022, she made history as the first woman President of the Union, while in 2025 she was re-elected unanimously, confirming the trust and universal recognition of her work.

A personality of high prestige and international reach, Melina Travlou possesses the rare ability to command authority without being imposing. She inspires and unites with courtesy, respect, and well-rounded positions, strategic thinking, and faith in the common good. With ethos, professionalism, and social solidarity, she exemplifies modern, human-centric leadership, guided by the power of teamwork and unity.

Born in Athens, with origins from Kefalonia, she grew up in an environment where the entrepreneurial spirit of her father, Nikolas Travlos, founder of Neptune, coexisted with the artistic sensitivity of her mother, Maritsa Travlou, a distinguished visual artist. From an early age, she worked alongside her father, gaining experiences and life lessons. She studied Business Administration at Northeastern University in Boston and returned to leave her own mark. Under her leadership, Neptune evolved into an international leading Group in the sector of sea and land transport of vehicles and goods, offering integrated logistics solutions.

The flagship of the Group is Neptune Lines, with a fleet of 22 PCTC vessels transporting 1.8 million vehicles annually, connecting 20 countries and 50 ports, from Northern Europe to the Mediterranean and the Black Sea, with an upcoming expansion to Latin America. With new-build dual-fuel vessels on order and investments in next-generation technologies, it supports sustainable development.

Neptune Shipping Agencies ensures the smooth management of the company’s vessel arrivals and departures in Piraeus. Neptune Dry Management manages a fleet of 4 modern dry cargo vessels, transporting vital raw materials. In parallel, Neptune Land Services provides land-based logistics solutions that ensure the timely and safe delivery of vehicles, with a presence in the Greek market through Ferst Logistics. A strategic investment of the Group is the first port car handling terminal, NLS Port–La Nouvelle, in southern France.

Melina Travlou, as a multifaceted entrepreneur and “proud member” of Greek shipping, holds significant positions in the international shipping community, actively participating in the unity and cooperation of the sector. She is a member of the Greek National Committee of DNV-GL and the Board of Directors of the Hellenic Mutual War Risks Association, while she also participates in the Executive Committee of the Malta International Shipowners Association. Concurrently, she serves as Honorary Consul of Denmark in Piraeus.

She stands out for her action in environment, society, and corporate governance, combining business acumen with social sensitivity, as well as in strengthening the position of women. Her leadership illuminates the excellence and strength of the voice of Greek shipping, while simultaneously enhancing the substantive support of society.

During her Presidency of the UGS and at SYN-ENOSIS, the collective social footprint of Greek shipping is continuously maximized with large-scale projects in every corner of the country. She herself contributes quietly but consistently to the promotion of our culture, also as a member of the Board of Directors of the Acropolis Museum.

As a founding member of Endeavor Greece and Axion Hellas, she supports young entrepreneurs and vulnerable groups in remote areas.

In an era when shipping faces enormous challenges, Melina Travlou steadily promotes modernization and responsible leadership, highlighting the industry’s irreplaceable role in the economy and society. She is not only the first woman President of the Union of Greek Shipowners and a successful entrepreneur, she is a symbol of ethos, substance, and progress, proving that today’s leadership can -and must- have a human face.

“Shipping should be recognized as a foundation of prosperity and the smooth functioning of the global community at a national, European, and international level and be protected as a non-negotiable pillar of global development and progress. The seafaring, pioneering, and leading Greek shipping should constitute a symbol of national pride, a beacon of inspiration and honor for Hellenism everywhere, the State, society, for every Greek woman and every Greek man, but also for the international community”.
