Metrans, the rail logistics subsidiary of Hamburger Hafen und Logistik AG (HHLA), and Interport Servis will collaborate on a joint project to modernize an intermodal terminal near the city of Košice in eastern Slovakia. The companies are establishing a cooperation that will create a new ecosystem for international logistics.
According to HHLA, the new facility, called TIP Košice (Terminál Intermodálnej Prepravy), will become a key hub for the transport infrastructure of Eastern Europe. It will serve as a model for integrated logistics development, sustainable growth, and regional connectivity.
A feature of the site is its dual-gauge infrastructure, which combines standard and broad gauge tracks, allowing for the transfer of cargo between different railways.
The Metrans terminal in Košice has been part of the European network since 2008. The current site covers almost 50,000 square meters. The new project expands capacity with the installation of new handling and storage areas, as well as two modern rail cranes to optimize cargo management. The completion of the expansion is scheduled for 2027.
Peter Kiss, Chief Executive Officer of Metrans, said that “we are witnessing a very dynamic development in this region, where the Metrans Group has been operating since 2008. The new TIP Košice not only expands capacity but also creates a forward-looking operations center that connects East and West, the EU and Ukraine, in addition to tradition and innovation.”
“Our customers can rely on us as a neutral provider to deliver flexible, sustainable, and highly efficient solutions that meet the demands of the global supply chains of the future,” commented Kiss.
?ubomír Fronk, General Director of Interport Servis, pointed out that “our goal is to turn Košice into a nerve center of the new logistics corridor between the European Union and Ukraine. Together with Metrans, we are transforming this site into a modern terminal that will offer not only state-of-the-art technical equipment but also a strategic location for the future of European logistics.”
The new logistics ecosystem will offer shortened supply chains, deployment of digital tools for managing logistics flows, creation of new employment opportunities for local communities, improvement of infrastructure and environmental standards, and a platform for connecting businesses within and outside the region.
