Milan – Five ferries from the Moby Lines group (Onorato family) will be auctioned online on November 12 with an initial value of 229.9 million euros (264.2 million dollars). The operation serves to repay the loans granted by MSC in 2023, as part of the separation agreement between Moby, Grandi Navi Veloci (GNV) and the MSC group of the Aponte family. The decision comes after the Italian Antitrust Authority approved the conciliation plan which mandated the sale of part of the fleet, believing that MSC’s presence in Moby’s capital undermined competition in the Italian ferry market.
The five ships at auction include two Moby ferries – Moby Aki (36,000 tonnes, built by Fincantieri in 2005) and Moby Wonder (2001, 36,000 tonnes) – which will be leased back to Moby for 15 years after the sale. The lot is completed by three units from the subsidiary Tirrenia: Moby Ale Due, Athara and Janas, all between 35,700 and 36,000 tonnes, with a capacity of up to 2,700 passengers and 900 cars.
Moby stated that the sale will allow it to zero out its debts and strengthen its financial structure, focusing on the most modern and efficient ships. The operation had been contested by the Grimaldi group, but its opposition was rejected.
The plan also includes reimbursements for passengers who had booked trips on the ferries involved.
