The Danish Energy Agency has decided to grant Molslinjen support of 180 million kroner for the purchase of three electric high-speed ferries for the company’s Kattegat route. The money comes from the Investment Support Scheme 2025, where the most CO2-heavy companies in Denmark that have the most difficulty transitioning can receive support.
“Now we are paving the way for electric ferries to become a very common sight in our domestic waters in the future, just as we have long been accustomed to seeing electric cars on the roads. With the new ferries, we will get one of the world’s longest and fastest fully electrified ferry routes,” says Lars Aagaard, Minister for Climate, Energy and Utilities.
With the new electric high-speed ferries, Molslinjen expects to be able to remove 132,000 tons of CO2 emissions per year.
“Denmark is an exceptional maritime nation. We have repeatedly led the way for the green transition at sea. Now we are going full speed ahead towards green domestic shipping. With support through the Investment Support Scheme, we will get three electric high-speed ferries operating on Danish routes. The government is once again pushing the green transition across the entire business sector and showing the world that green initiatives create tailwinds for growth and development,” says Minister for Industry Morten Bødskov.
Molslinjen expects the three ferries to be launched in the years after 2027.
