Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) has made container shipping history by becoming the first carrier to exceed a 7 million TEU fleet capacity, according to Alphaliner. The milestone was reached following the delivery of two 16,000 TEU Neo-Panamax vessels, MSC Salerno and MSC Grace, bringing MSC’s total capacity to a record high. The Swiss-based giant achieved this feat in just 15 months after crossing the 6 million TEU mark, driven mainly by 68 newbuild deliveries totalling nearly 800,000 TEU and a series of vessel charters and second-hand acquisitions. MSC’s global market share now stands at 21.2%, far ahead of Maersk’s 13.9%, cementing its dominance as the world’s largest container line.
