In a significant move to strengthen its presence in China, MSC, the world’s leading shipping company, has officially launched its first ship management company in the People’s Republic.
The new entity, named MSC Ship Management, was inaugurated in the Ningbo Beilun Free Trade Zone. According to Alphaliner, MSC operates a global fleet of 928 ships, with a total capacity exceeding 6.7 million TEU. The company is also bolstering its growth with 129 newbuildings on order, adding another 2.17 million TEU to its fleet. This expansion, mostly built in China, highlights the importance of the Chinese shipbuilding sector and maritime services for MSC’s future.
With the new ship management company, MSC aims not only to oversee the commercial management of its fleet operating in China but also the technical aspects (including newbuildings) and, most importantly, to focus on workforce recruitment. This includes the simultaneous launch of the brand MSC Crewing Services (China) Co. Ltd. According to local media reports, the company plans to recruit 2,000 Chinese seafarers by 2026.
Kumar Jha, Chief Executive Officer of MSC Ship Management, emphasized the strategic importance of Ningbo’s location and professional maritime services, acknowledging the strong partnership between MSC and local maritime authorities: “MSC’s expansion into ship management in China underscores the company’s commitment to strengthening its global network and fostering the next generation of maritime talent in China.”
