Mediterranean Shipping Co (MSC) has reached a total of 461 second-hand container ships added to its fleet since it began an unprecedented purchasing spree in August 2020, largely replacing chartered tonnage.
According to Alphaliner’s data, the world’s largest container shipping company, which recently surpassed the 7 million TEU mark, has added three more older ships to its massive fleet.
The 3,651 TEU capacity Atlantica Pioneer was purchased from Oslo-based Atlantica Shipping for a price of over $45 million. The disposal of this container ship means the Norwegian shipowner no longer owns any container vessels.
Meanwhile, the 3,799 TEU capacity Irenes Resolve was purchased from Greece’s Tsakos Shipping & Trading for $23 million. MSC also purchased the 3,534 TEU capacity Rio Kobe, controlled by Marlow, for $32 million.
Alongside its second-hand vessel buying spree, MSC has also kept shipyards in Asia very busy since the 2020s. According to Alphaliner data, MSC’s record orderbook today stands at 123 ships totaling over 2.1 million TEU.
