More specifically, a crew member who fell under unclear circumstances into the sea from a cargo ship near the Maldives, and was found several hours later dead, according to the confirmation by the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) on Friday.
The MNDF stated that the unfortunate seafarer was recovered dead in the southern waters of K. Feydhoofinolhu by the Second Squadron of the Coast Guard under the Male’ Area Command. The corpse was handed over to the Maldives Police Service for further investigation, according to reports from local media.
The incident occurred late on September 22 on the ship MSV Daulah with an Indian flag, which was anchored approximately one kilometer north of Vilimale, near the capital of the Maldives, Male.
Around 11:35 p.m., the ship reported that one of its crew members was missing and it was believed he had fallen into the sea.
Following the report, the Maldives Coast Guard immediately initiated a search and rescue operation. Both naval and air units participated in the search and it continued intensively for hours.
By 7:22 a.m. on September 23, approximately eight hours after the crew member’s disappearance, the search had not yielded results and no seafarer had been located, according to statements by the MNDF cited by the local news agency sun.mv.
The search and rescue efforts continued until Friday, when the crew member’s corpse was found. The MNDF confirmed the discovery and stated that the case is now under further investigation by the Maldives Police Service.
