Closed due to floating and sunken containers. The Genoa Port Authority issued an ordinance on Monday, November 10, aimed at prohibiting the inner water area of the Voltri Prà port following the fall of 15 containers from the container ship Msc Mariagrazia moored at the berth of the Psa terminal. In the ordinance, the maritime authority specifies that “the exact position of the containers that fell inside the port basin of the Voltri Prà port during commercial operations is not precisely known, and that
they are still submerged and therefore dangerous for navigation.”
For these reasons, “the inner water area of the port facing the operational quay of the ‘PSA Genova Prà SPA’ terminal, from the issuance of this ordinance until the completion of the recovery of the
containers, is prohibited for navigation,” meaning ships will not be able to enter or exit. Exceptions are made for “Coast Guard vessels,
Police Force vehicles, and rescue vehicles in the performance of their institutional duties and for vehicles involved in the recovery of the containers,” many of which have already been retrieved.
It will be the Psa Genova Prà terminal, “upon completion of the recovery and the related securing of all containers, that must communicate to the Port Authority “the cessation of the need for the Ordinance to be in force and the end of the recovery operations, specifying that the waters are to be considered safe.”
Regarding the incident, the container terminal stated that “on Sunday afternoon, probably due to a sudden and abnormal intensification of the wind, a ship moored at the terminal lost some empty containers at sea. The Port Authority was immediately informed and the maritime agency provided all documentation related to the containers involved. Upon instruction from the Port Authority, recovery operations were promptly initiated with the support of divers, tugs, and mooring personnel. The terminal guaranteed from the outset maximum collaboration and assistance to the ship, which was able to regularly proceed with loading and unloading operations in complete safety.”
In addition to the Msc Mariagrazia, the container ships Cma Cgm Ambition and Hyundai Mars are also ‘blocked’ in the Genoa Pra’ port.
