New delivery bolsters Egyptian tugboat fleet

Must read

Med Marine has delivered the second tug of a two-vessel newbuilding programme to the AP Moller-Maersk subsidiary for operation in the Port of Suez

Svitzer Suez 3 is an escort tug with azimuth stern drive (ASD) propulsion and 75 tonnes of bollard pull. It was built at the Eregli Shipyard, Turkey as hull number ER102 and delivered 7 June.

Its arrival increases the number of Svitzer’s tugboats in Egypt to six, with operations in Port Said, Port Suez and along the Suez Canal.

Svitzer Suez 3 was built to a MED-A2885 design, based on Robert Allan Ltd-design RAstar 2800 tugs, with fire-fighting and escort notations.

Med Marine delivered the first of these two MED-A2885 tugs, Svitzer Port Said 3, April 2022, for operation in Port Said.

Svitzer Suez 3 has an overall length 29 m, a beam of 13 m and hull depth of around 5 m. With a draught of 6 m, a top speed of 12 knots, it has accommodation for 10 people.

Its propulsion consists of two Caterpillar-supplied Cat 3516C main engines, each developing 2,100 kW at 1,600 rpm, with a slipping clutch to drive fire-fighting systems.

IMO Tier II-classed engines drive two Kongsberg US 255S thrusters with fixed-pitch propellers. This ASD tug also has a Palfinger deck crane, FFS fire-fighting system of FiFi class, and Furuno radar.

In May, Alexandria Port Authority ordered three harbour tugs from the local shipbuilder, Alexandria Shipyard to renew its towage capabilities in the growing port. The first of these 35-m tugs is expected to be delivered by the end of 2023 and the other two in 2024.
