A new 36.4-m fast supply vessel (FSV) has been ordered by Senegal’s Oil Senegal Support Services (O3S) to support the West African country’s nascent offshore energy sector

Australia’s Incat Crowther and Penguin International are teaming on the design and construction of the aluminium-hulled vessel, which will be capable of reaching speeds of 33.5 knots while carrying 28 service personnel and 20 tonnes of cargo.

Incat Crowther said the vessel’s concept represents a “unique blend” of features of vessels employed in offshore oil and gas and offshore wind sectors. Its catamaran hull is derived from Penguin International’s WindFlex 32 crew transfer vessel (CTV) design for offshore windfarm service. That design was a co-development of the Singapore boatbuilder and the Australian naval architectural firm.

Key elements of the design are its large 62 m2 foredeck that includes a dedicated cargo area and FROG crew transfer crane for the safe transfer of personnel offshore. It will also have high-performance bow fendering to provide stability and safety for transfer of maintenance personnel to offshore structures.

A raised wheelhouse will provide improved visibility for the captain during transfer operations.

To provide propulsion power and compliance with IMO Tier III emissions regulations, the FSV will be equipped with four Caterpillar C32 main engines, each rated at 1,081 kW at 2,150 rpm. Propulsion will be supplied by four Hamilton HTX52 waterjets.

Construction of the FSV will begin later this year with delivery targeted for 2025.

When delivered the FSV could well be deployed in the country’s offshore energy sector. Senegal marked two milestones earlier this year for offshore oil and gas projects. In February, the floating production, storage and offloading (FPSO) vessel Léopold Sédar Senghor arrived offshore to support the development of Phase 1 of the Sangomar field, the country’s first offshore oil and gas project.

Also in the works is the Greater Tortue Ahmeyim (GTA) LNGproject, a floating LNG facility on the maritime border of Mauritania and Senegal that will produce about 2.3 mta of LNG when fully operational. BP announced the arrival of the FLNG vessel Gimi earlier this year.

Furthermore, Senegal’s newly elected President Bassirou Diomaye Faye has ambitions to grow investments in both its offshore oil and gas and renewables sectors.
