New weekly RoRo link between Poland and Sweden

Towards the end of May, Lakeway Link will launch a pioneering RoRo service specializing in high and heavy cargo between Poland and Sweden. The service between Gdynia and Södertälje, commencing May 21, will offer an alternative to traditional road and rail transportation.

This marks a significant development for efficient and sustainable cargo movement between the two Scandinavian nations. Lakeway Link is the sole provider of scheduled /roll-off (RoRo) transport for trailers and high and heavy cargo on the Gdynia (Poland) – Södertälje (Sweden) route.

Easing traffic congestion and environmental impact

The new service aims to alleviate the pressure on the congested road and rail infrastructure connecting mainland Europe to Scandinavia. By offering a viable and eco-friendly alternative, Lakeway Link seeks to reduce both traffic congestion and environmental emissions associated with traditional overland transport.

Dedicated vessel and strategically located ports

To facilitate this service, Lakeway Link has secured the M/S Lakeway Express, a RoRo vessel sailing under the Swedish flag with Västerås, Sweden, as its home port (also Lakeway Link’s headquarters). The Lakeway Express boasts a significant carrying capacity (1625 lane meters or approximately 108 trailers), allowing it to cater to various cargo needs, including trailers, project cargo, and mafi transport (specialized trailers for oversized objects).

The vessel will operate between the OT Port Gdynia and the Port of Södertälje, with a transit time of approximately 22 hours. Following the completion of the Södertälje locks reconstruction project in 2026, the service is planned to expand to include Västerås, further enhancing access to the Mälaren region.

Sustainable and efficient transport solution

Strategically chosen ports with excellent connections on both ends of the route will further enhance the service’s appeal. Gdynia, a key transhipment port and hub for intercontinental maritime traffic, offers easy access to major European transport lines. Södertälje provides convenient onward connections to final destinations within Sweden and Norway, many of which lie within easy reach of the Mälaren region.

This is the first step in our introduction of a new, innovative waterway transport solution directly into central Sweden and the Mälaren region. Our solution is a very competitive alternative to traditional road transport, providing a shipping option with comparatively low environmental impact. Additionally, our service addresses the severe shortage of truck drivers. Being non-driver-dependent, drivers leave their trailers at the quay, and the trailers are driven on board from there,” says Fredrik Hermansson, CEO Lakeway Link.

Lakeway Link’s new RoRo service is poised to play a transformative role in the high and heavy cargo transportation landscape between Poland and Sweden, offering a more sustainable and efficient solution for businesses across both countries.
