New Zealand’s Lyttelton Port surpasses half million TEU

Must read

NEW ZEALAND’s Lyttelton Port handled a record-breaking 502,210 TEU for the first time in the port’s history, reports London’s Port Technology.

The total throughput for the port’s financial year 2022 was a 15 per cent increase from last year.

Net profit after tax for FY2022 was US$10.8 million, an increase of 18 per cent from the previous year.

‘This significant milestone was only possible thanks to the hard work, dedication, and innovation from our teams at Lyttelton Port, CityDepot, and MidlandPort, as well as our customers,’ said Lyttelton Port CEO Kirstie Gardener.

‘It’s been a year of great highs, but one tragic low for the port with the loss of cargo handler Don Grant, on ANZAC Day. Don’s passing was deeply shocking for the Lyttelton Port whanau, and this loss is felt by us all, but most of all by Don’s family.’

External investigations into the death continue with Lyttelton Port’s cooperation.

Former CEO Roger Gray resigned to move to Ports of Auckland. Ms Gardener is the first female chief executive of Lyttelton Port and has been part of the executive team as general manager of people and safety since February 2019.

‘I’m committed to building on Lyttelton Port’s momentum this year and ensuring that we continue to play our role in delivering positive outcomes for Canterbury and the wider South Island,’ said Ms Gardener.

‘People are at the core of what we do, and I’m proud to lead the Lyttelton Port whanau and am excited about what we can achieve together in the future.’

‘We have completed some major upgrades to our dry dock facilities this year, and we’re also adding a new container yard, four new reefer towers, new truck receival, and dispatch lanes, and a new straddle workshop facility,’ said Ms Gardener.
