The cross-border port area North Sea Port (Netherlands-Belgium) announced that the technology company LanzaTech has decided to develop Europe’s first sustainable aviation fuel production plant at its facilities. The initiative will be carried out in the Ghent sub-area.
According to information reported on the port’s website, “LanzaTech Global’s new plant will annually produce 79,000 tonnes of sustainable aviation fuel and 9,000 tonnes of renewable diesel. Furthermore, the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) notification will soon be submitted to the competent authorities, a significant step towards the final investment decision.”
Additionally, the publication reported that “this investment aligns perfectly with North Sea Port’s strategic plan Impact 2030, which focuses on sustainable economic growth, energy projects, and circular value chains. The arrival of LanzaTech strengthens the port’s position as a pioneer in the transition towards alternative fuels such as hydrogen, biofuels, and sustainable synthetic fuels, as well as towards a climate-neutral industry.”
“The development of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) production within the port area represents a significant step towards greater sustainability in the aviation sector and is part of the broader ambition to turn the site into a leading energy and raw materials hub in Europe.”
In this regard, Cas König, Director of North Sea Port, stated that “this investment confirms our strategy of full commitment to the energy transition and the circular economy. With LanzaTech, we are not only bringing a pioneering technology company to Ghent, but we are also strengthening our role as a port in promoting sustainable growth, innovation, and high-quality employment. The project demonstrates how, as a port, we leverage our scale, infrastructure, and industrial collaboration to attract and establish new future-oriented activities.”
In total, the investment made by the technology company is estimated to reach 500 million euros.
