Japanese logistics company Nippon Yusen Kaisha (NYK) has announced that it will explore the potential use of laser technology in preventing ship corrosion.

NYK said it would utilise CoolLaser technology belonging to Toyokoh, a Japanese firm specializing in sustainable engineering, in an attempt to reduce crew working-hours and maintenance costs.

The move to the technology is also part of its plan to reduce emissions as part of its environmentally friendly ‘Staying Ahead 2022’ initiative.

On August 3, 2018, the company announced another MoU, this time exploring a bunker dedicated to supplying LNG as it prepares for the International Maritime Organisation’s (IMO) 2020 rules on sulphur emissions.

Rust removal usually takes place using power tools and paint.

Crew undertake the maintenance of shell plates when a vessel is at dock using a technique called sand blasting, which creates dust and waste.

However, CoolLaser uses laser technology that eliminates rust.

Toykoh has claimed it works particularly well in narrow spaces, without creating dust and waste.

Speaking about its collaboration with Toykoh, NYK said: “For the use of CoolLaser technology in the maritime field, the two companies will develop a device, system, and measures that suit the maritime industry by studying the impact of lasers on steel material and coating adhesion, in addition to safety measures and improvements.

“A trial is scheduled to be done on an actual ship while the vessel is in dry dock.”
