Tokyo, Japan – July 2025 – In a major step toward its net-zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions target, leading Japanese shipping company NYK Line has launched continuous bio-LNG fuel utilization across its fleet of LNG-powered car carriers. This pioneering effort, enabled by Dutch marine fuel supplier Titan Supply B.V., marks a key milestone in maritime decarbonization and highlights the growing role of alternative bunkering solutions in sustainable shipping.
The ongoing bio-LNG bunkering operations are taking place at the Port of Zeebrugge, Belgium—one of Europe’s key hubs for green fuel deployment. The first vessel to be bunkered with bio-LNG was the Daisy Leader on June 15, followed by the Sumire Leader on July 18, underscoring NYK’s commitment to scaling clean fuel adoption across its global fleet.
Bio-LNG, or liquefied biomethane, is produced by purifying and liquefying methane derived from organic biomass such as food waste and animal manure. Beyond being renewable, bio-LNG delivers substantial GHG emissions reductions across its entire lifecycle—well-to-wake—by capturing methane that would otherwise be released into the atmosphere, thus preventing a highly potent greenhouse gas from contributing to climate change.
The bio-LNG supplied by Titan Clean Fuels is certified as carbon neutral on a well-to-wake basis through the mass balance method, an administrative system that tracks the environmental attributes of biomethane throughout the supply chain. This enables blending with conventional LNG while still crediting its emissions reductions. Additionally, the fuel meets ISCC EU certification standards, ensuring traceability and compliance with stringent European sustainability criteria.
This initiative aligns directly with NYK’s “Decarbonization Story,” published in November 2023, which outlines its commitment to achieving net-zero GHG emissions by 2050. The continued and expanded use of bio-LNG is a core component of this strategy, reflecting NYK’s leadership in environmental stewardship and innovation within the shipping industry.
Niels den Nijs, CEO of Titan Clean Fuels, praised the collaboration, stating:
“I would like to express my sincere respect for NYK’s decision to begin using bio-LNG fuel. Titan’s mission is to provide solutions that help the maritime industry transition to cleaner fuels. We are proud to accelerate decarbonization together with NYK through this partnership.”
Kaori Takahashi, General Manager of NYK Line’s Fuel Group, added:
“We are pleased to begin continuous use of bio-LNG fuel. Bio-LNG is a highly effective option for decarbonizing shipping, and we will continue to actively promote its adoption. This initiative is a significant step toward reducing our environmental impact and building a more sustainable future.”
NYK Line’s adoption of continuous bio-LNG bunkering sends a strong signal to the global maritime fuel industry. It demonstrates the growing commercial demand for sustainable marine fuels and validates bio-LNG’s role as a viable drop-in alternative for existing LNG-powered vessels.
This move is expected to catalyze further investment in bio-LNG production infrastructure, distribution networks, and bunkering services, particularly in key ports and maritime hubs.
The use of the mass balance method offers a practical and scalable pathway for integrating renewable fuels into existing bunkering ecosystems—making the energy transition more attainable for the broader industry.
As environmental regulations tighten and pressure to decarbonize intensifies, collaborations like that of NYK and Titan Clean Fuels will play a pivotal role in accelerating the global transition to sustainable shipping. This initiative firmly positions bio-LNG as a critical transitional fuel on the path to a fully decarbonized maritime future.
