Nippon Yusen Kaisha (NYK) Line has ordered its third LPG dual-fuel very large LPG and liquefied ammonia gas carrier (VLGC) from Kawasaki Heavy Industries (KHI)
Like the first two ships ordered by NYK Line in December 2021, this vessel will be equipped with separate cargo tanks, with a 86,700-m3 tank capacity, designed to carry LPG and ammonia at the same time to flexibly respond to trade patterns.
Ammonia is projected to be used widely in the future. In addition to the LPG dual-fuel engine, the ship will have a shaft generator that can generate electricity during the voyage by using the rotation of the shaft that connects the main engine to the propeller. Since the diesel generator can be stopped during normal seagoing transit, realising full navigation with LPG fuel will be possible except for a small amount of pilot fuel.
When the vessel uses LPG as fuel, the exhaust gas will contain 95% less sulphur oxide and 20% less CO2 compared with NYK’s conventional VLGCs using heavy-oil fired engines. The new VLGC will comply with the global sulphur cap regulations introduced in January 2020 and the EEDI phase III requirements.
NYK Line expects the vessel to obtain certification from class society ClassNK as a VLGC that has a preparatory design in accordance with the guidelines issued by ClassNK, allowing the vessel to use ammonia fuel in the future.
The 230-m ship will be built at the KHI’s Sakaide Works shipyard and is set for delivery in 2024.
The CO2 Shipping & Terminals Conference will be held 30 June 2022. Details and tickets can be found here
