Ocean Winds, the 50-50 joint venture between EDP Renewables and Engie, has secured around €2.0Bn (US$2.3Bn) in project finance and reached financial close for its first offshore windfarm in the Baltic, BC-Wind

The project finance for BC-Wind, which is now ready to move from the development phase into construction, is supported by the European Investment Bank (EIB), which provided close to one third of the finance required, Instituto de Crédito Oficial Español and 13 commercial banks.

BC-Wind will have a capacity of 390 MW and be built in the Polish exclusive economic zone in the Baltic Sea, approximately 23 km from the coastline, near the municipalities of Krokowa and Choczewo in the Pomeranian Voivodeship. The windfarm will comprise 26 turbines with a capacity of 14 MW each, equipped with a power boost feature that increases output to 15 MW. The Polish offshore windfarm is expected to deliver first power in 2028 and, once fully operational, will provide clean, zero-emissions electricity to nearly half a million Polish households.

Ocean Winds chief operating officer Bautista Rodriguez said, “In Poland, offshore wind is a key driver of the country’s energy transition and a real opportunity for the development of a revitalised economic sector.

“At Ocean Winds, we are convinced that Poland has the potential to become a regional leader in offshore wind – both in terms of clean energy production and industrial capability.

“Supported by key financial partners such as the European Investment Bank, our BC-Wind project is a contribution to this process and a step toward increasing the share of renewables in the energy mix.”

Ocean Wind managing director Poland, Kacper Kostrzewa said, “Reaching financial close is not only a milestone for the project, but also a milestone for the Polish offshore wind industry. It confirms that Poland is ready to deliver large-scale offshore wind projects with local expertise and technology.

“Together with our Polish suppliers, we are entering the next phase of BC-Wind – construction of the windfarm. This will strengthen the development of local content and supports the integration of Polish companies into the offshore wind supply chain. This is not just an investment in energy – it is an investment in a competitive industry in Poland.”

BC-Wind said it attaches “great importance” to national content, with numerous Polish companies included in the project supply chain. Onshore construction will commence in 2026, with the design and construction of the onshore substation and export cable route, which is to be carried out by the Polish company P&Q. Electricity will be transmitted to the onshore substation using cables designed and installed by Tele-Fonika Kable, a company based in Bydgoszcz in Poland. In parallel, Ocean Winds will build a service base in Władysławowo. The project will also be the first in Poland to be fully delivered from Polish ports, with Świnoujście serving as the marshalling harbour for foundations and Gdańsk for wind turbines.
