With this statement, Jason Stefanatos, Global Decarbonization Director of DNV Maritime, commented on the latest data from DNV’s Alternative Fuels Insight (AFI) platform, which show that – despite the general downturn in shipbuilding – the alternative fuel vessel market remains particularly active.
According to the data, 30 new ships were added to the database in October, mainly LNG-powered containerships, while four new ships in the orderbook are expected to run on methanol.
In total for 2025, 222 orders for ships with alternative fuel combustion capability have been recorded, with LNG-capable vessels representing over two-thirds of the new orders.
