Ocean Network Express (ONE) has completed the third trial of marine biofuel onboard the Singapore-flagged vessel M/V NYK Fuji.

On 11 February, the ship was refuelled with 1,300 tonnes of marine biofuel product during bunkering at the Port of Singapore.

M/V NYK Fuji fully consumed the biofuel in 45 days.

The trial started on 21 February after the vessel passed the Malacca Straits, sailing onwards to the ports of Durban and Cape Town, before returning to Southeast Asia.

The biofuel product used by ONE was a blend of Brown Grease Methyl Ester (BGME), a type of Fatty Acid Methyl Ester (FAME), with Very Low Sulphur Fuel Oil (VLSFO).

The blend of BGME with VLSFO was supplied by BP and testing was performed in collaboration with Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha and the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore.

The BGME uses a sustainable biofuel component that is technically and operationally similar to petroleum-derived marine fuels.

The trial showed that the product is a valid drop-in fuel that can help reducing emissions in shipping without any modifications to marine engines or fuel infrastructures.

ONE has stated that the trial marks a step forward to reducing carbon footprint and achieving its environmental sustainability target of net zero emission by 2050.

The news follows ONE’s trial of biofuel on the M/V MOL Experience vessel conducted last year.

In its latest November financial report,ONE predicted a surge in net profit for 2021 for a total of almost $12 billion.
