Ocean Network Express (ONE) commissioned the construction of six new 15,000 TEU container ships powered by liquefied natural gas (LNG) from the South Korean shipyard HD Hyundai Heavy Industries.

The unit value of each vessel is over USD 200 million, while the full order for the ships exceeds USD 1.2 billion. The manufacturing process provides for the vessels to be delivered to ONE in 2029, as reported by Imarine.

Although initially the shipping company’s project for ship construction contemplated investing USD 4.2 billion with the aim of ordering up to 22 container ships from various shipyards, the company would be reducing orders and adopting a more conservative strategy.

According to analysts, the change of course could be explained in the current industry context with logistical disruptions generated by the conflict in the Middle East, the increase in newbuilding prices, and the possible future reduction of freight rates.

However, the current order will drive the expansion of ONE’s fleet towards units powered by alternative fuels, whose construction has been developed at various shipyards since 2024.
