ONE wins approval for its first ammonia ship

A new 3,500 teu ammonia vessel is one step closer to entering the fold of the shipping company Ocean Network Express (ONE.)

The company writes this in an announcement stating that the shipping company has received an approval in principle for the ship.

The new ship has been developed jointly by ONE, Nihon Shipyard Co. and the classification society DNV as part of a joint development project established in late 2022 between the three parties.

ONE has been working towards this particular approval since 2022, as ammonia ships are important to the company in its goal of reaching zero emissions by 2050.

”Ammonia is definitely one of the primary focuses of our research as ammonia fuel has a great potential of generating lower GHG emissions than conventional marine fuels. We are pleased to have made such a progress, and we will continue our study on ammonia,” says Koshiro Wake, vice president of strategy at ONE.

The company aims to invest no less than $20 billion in new assets by 2030, according to the plan, with the aim of increasing efficiency and decarbonizing.

ONE’s goal is to grow its fleet with a total capacity of 150,000 TEUs every year until 2030.
