DEME’s offshore installation giant, Orion has returned to the United States for more work on Dominion Energy’s Coastal Virginia Offshore Vind. The vessel completed the installation of 29 monopiles at the Moray West wind farm in Scotland.
The DP3 offshore installation vessel, Orion made a direct transatlantic voyage to the Port of Norfolk, Virginia, where it is now being mobilised to begin work on Dominion Energy’s Coastal Virginia Offshore Wind (CVOW).
DEME will install 176 monopile foundations, each weighing about 1,500 tonnes. The loadouts will take place at the Portsmouth Marine Terminal, a deepwater facility in Virginia recently upgraded to handle offshore wind projects.
Leveraging proven technology, DEME will deploy Orion with the Vibro Hammer and Impact Hammer to install CVOW’s XXL monopiles. The same equipment delivered success at Moray West during harsh winter conditions. DEME’s international project team and crew will include American Pile Drivers, creating a robust and prepared team, ready to tackle this large-scale project.
In addition to Orion, more DEME vessels will join the scene for the comprehensive scope of work we will execute on Coastal Virginia Offshore Wind. This includes the installation of 176 transition pieces, three offshore substations, scour protection and the supply and installation of both export and inter-array cables in consortium with Prysmian.
Once completed, Coastal Virginia Offshore Wind will bring clean energy to up to 660,000 households in the Commonwealth of Virginia while avoiding as much as 5 million tons of carbon dioxide emissions annually.
