Osaka University has announced the launch of a new Open Collaboration Laboratory for Enabling Advanced Marine Systems (OCEANS).

The facility has been created in partnership with Imabari Shipbuilding, Japan Marine United Corporation (JMU), ClassNK, and MTI. Nihon Shipyard (NSY), jointly owned by Imabari Shipbuilding and JMU, will provide support for design and engineering research.

Located in the Techno Alliance Building at the university’s Graduate School of Engineering, the laboratory will integrate expertise across ship hydrodynamics, structural dynamics, propulsion, electrical systems and control technologies, with the aim of applying advanced systems engineering and AI-driven approaches to ship design, construction, and certification.

Osaka University’s Department of Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering will oversee the initiative.
