Pakistan launched an urgent tender to purchase a maritime cargo of liquefied natural gas (LNG) with delivery this week, as renewed tensions in the Strait of Hormuz are disrupting energy flows through one of the world’s most important maritime routes.

The state-owned company Pakistan LNG Limited invited international suppliers to submit bids for an LNG cargo with delivery at Port Qasim, Karachi, according to a tender document published by the Public Procurement Regulatory Authority of Pakistan.

Delivery of the cargo is scheduled between June 30 and July 4. The tender requests 140,000 cubic meters of LNG, with a tolerance of plus or minus 10%.

The Strait of Hormuz is a key route for global LNG shipments, especially from Qatar, one of Pakistan’s main suppliers. Any disruption to maritime traffic through this waterway can force buyers to turn to the spot market, where cargoes are often more expensive and harder to secure on short notice.

Pakistan has faced repeated pressure on energy supply since the conflict in the region affected LNG flows, leading the country to seek additional cargoes on the spot market to cover domestic demand.

The latest tender comes after attacks on commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz, which have raised concerns among shipowners, insurers, and energy buyers about the safety of transits through this waterway.
