Parts of Maersk Honam en route to South Korean yard

Part of the fire-damaged container vessel Maersk Honam will now be freighted to Hyundai Heavy Industries’ South Korean yard for rebuilding.

Maersk Honam has been idle in the Jebel Ali port since the fatal fire on board the vessel in March 2018, where five crew members lost their lives.

Now the vessel has been separated into parts, and one 228.5 meter stretch from the vessel’s centre to the back is currently being transported to South Korea on board heavy-lift vessel Xin Guan Hua.

Hyundai Heavy Industries will rebuild the front of the 15,262 teu vessel, which was originally built on the yard.

Maersk expects that the vessel will be ready for sailing in the second half of 2019.

The other half of the vessel will be sent to Drydocks World Dubai, where destroyed containers are removed. When the ship half is completely cleaned of environmentally harmful elements it will be sent onward for scrapping.
