The Corío Port project is shaping up to transform southern Peru into an international hub in the region. The facility planned for construction in Arequipa is expected to connect the South American country with Asian trade routes.
In this regard, Rohel Sánchez, regional governor of Arequipa, stated that through this port project, his region can become a major connectivity hub in the Pacific.
The authority detailed that the initiative involves an estimated investment of 7 billion dollars, equivalent to approximately 1.9% of the Gross Domestic Product, assuring that “it is not just another port in Peru or southern Peru; it is the megaport of South America.”
Among the advantages of this project, the strategic position of the port infrastructure in the southern Pacific stands out, with the exceptional natural draft of Corío ranging between 20 and 29 meters in depth, a feature that would allow it to receive Post-Panamax and Ultra Large Container Vessels.
Furthermore, regarding dredging, this port will be able to save 90% of this process due to its natural conditions.
The facility will be divided into 1,127 hectares for the port core, 2,609 for the industrial zone, 467 for the logistics platform, and 1,192 designated for the so-called port city.
It is estimated that in an initial stage, the also called “Megaport of the Americas Corío” could move 20 million metric tons per year, and at maximum projection it would reach up to 100 million metric tons annually.
