Peru will develop quality standards for the modernization of its ports, given that more than 90% of its foreign trade is mobilized by sea, and for this purpose, the National Quality Institute (Inacal) has installed the Technical Standardization Committee (CTN) for Ports and Terminals.

The body attached to the Ministry of Production emphasized that this action is “a key step to develop Peruvian Technical Standards that improve the efficiency, safety, sustainability, and modernization of the national port system.”

In this way, it contributes to reducing logistical times, optimizing costs, and strengthening the confidence of users and operators.

During the ceremony, the executive president of Inacal, César José Bernabé Pérez, highlighted that the installation of the committee constitutes a milestone for the continuous improvement of the port sector, by promoting the adoption of international standards that will elevate the performance of the national logistics chain.

Bernabé emphasized that ports are strategic infrastructures for energizing the economy and connecting Peru with international markets, so their standardization represents a transcendental opportunity to consolidate a more efficient and secure system.

The new committee will prioritize the development of standards related to port infrastructure and operation, safety and security, environmental sustainability, specialized maintenance, technological integration, interoperability, and terminal performance.

The secretariat will be in charge of the Technical Directorate (Ditec) of the National Port Authority (APN), which will lead the process with a technical and evidence-based approach.

The CTN is composed of public sector entities such as the APN, the Ministry of Transport and Communications, the General Directorate of Captains and Coast Guards (Dicapi), the Supervisory Agency for Investment in Public Transport Infrastructure (Ositran), and the Superintendency of Land Transportation of Persons, Cargo, and Merchandise (Sunat).

Likewise, port operators such as DP World Callao and Cosco Shipping Ports Chancay Perú S.A. will participate; technical-accreditation entities such as Bureau Veritas and Intertek; as well as universities and professional associations, including the “Almirante Miguel Grau” National Merchant Marine School (ENAMM), National University of Engineering (UNI), Pontifical Catholic University of Peru (PUCP), National University of San Marcos (UNMSM), and the College of Engineers of Peru.

Inacal will provide permanent support, coordinating efforts with public and private institutions and academia to strengthen port governance and promote innovation in the sector.

The participation of this group of actors will allow for the construction of consensual standards, aligned with international best practices and aimed at responding to the operational, technical, and regulatory needs of the port system.
