The Port of Bilbao will develop a photovoltaic plant and 14 connection points by 2025

The European Union has awarded the Port Authority of Bilbao over €14 million ($14.2 million) for the completion of anonshore power project.

The Spanish port will develop onshore power supply infrastructure across its area, including a photovoltaic plant and 14 connection points at the cruise, ferry and container piers. The project is expected to be completed by 2025, in time for the 2026 cruise season.

“We are delighted with this result,” said Gloria Frau, cruise manager for the Port Authority of Bilbao. “We are also very grateful for the written support from MSC Cruises, Carnival UK, TUI Cruises and Royal Caribbean International that has helped the funding case.”

The new project will accompany previously announced developments by the port, including a wind farm and gas bunkering station, which are already in operation, and a hydrogen and e-fuel plant being constructed to enter operation by 2024.

Bilbao is aiming to reduce its emissions by 55 per cent by 2030 in line with a target set by the EU, and to cut its greenhouse gas emissions by 40 per cent to meet the ‘Fit for 55’ targets.
