The Port of Iquique continues to consolidate a positive performance in 2025. During August, cargo movement reached 275,440 tons, which represents an increase of 59% compared to the 173,369 tons recorded in the same month of the previous year.

With this result, the cumulative total between January and August reached 2,264,847 tons, a figure that exceeds the 1,749,585 tons moved in the same period of 2024 by 29%.

The general manager of Empresa Portuaria Iquique (EPI), Rubén Castro, highlighted that “although the year began with difficulties due to factors external to port management, we have managed to reverse that trend and consolidate an upward operational performance. According to projections and what was outlined together with our concessionaire ITI, we expect to exceed 3 million tons in 2025 and set a new milestone in transferred volumes.”

Castro also underscored the diversification of operations, indicating that, alongside the traditional movement managed by Iquique Terminal Internacional (ITI), the Molo Terminal has played a key role.

“There we have received cargo for mining projects, lithium batteries (BESS) destined for photovoltaic initiatives in the region, and also factory ships, which has allowed for greater employment opportunities for port workers,” Castro specified.

The August performance was also reflected in other indicators, as 30 vessels were served, that is, 6 more than in the same month last year. Likewise, the flow of exports grew by 95%, while imports increased by 57% compared to August 2024.

Regarding tonnage by cargo type, there was a 70% advance in containerized cargo transferred, 13% in automotive cargo, and 4% in breakbulk or project cargo. On the other hand, regarding TEUs, an increase of 50 was verified compared to the same month of 2024.

For its part, Bolivian cargo movement also showed dynamism, as in August it grew by 43% compared to the same month in 2024, while the annual cumulative figure shows a 20% increase.
