The Port of Klaipėda increased cargo throughput by 11% year on year in the first nine months of 2025 to 28.7 million tons, with container cargo and ro-ro forming the largest shares and notable gains in LNG and construction materials.

Container cargo rose 31% to almost 9.6 million tons. LNG handling and construction materials each grew by 23% to about 1.7 million tons, with the FSRU “Independence” cited as increasingly important amid the geopolitical situation and Lithuania’s decision to end gas imports from Russia.

Ro-ro volumes increased 6% to almost 5 million tons, and oil products were up 2% to nearly 3 million tons; these segments are affected by global markets, geopolitical factors, and green-transition policies.

Passenger traffic increased 8% year on year, with 26,395 more people traveling through the port; cruise passengers rose 12%.

Over the first three quarters, 52 ships were repaired and 2 new ships were built. Scrap metal handling decreased 18%, wood handling fell 16% (all wood was exported, 83% to Scandinavian countries), and fertilizer handling declined 13% as flows from Russia and Belarus stopped due to sanctions; fertilizers handled at the port now mainly come from Lithuanian companies AB “Achema” and AB “Lifosa.”

Grain handling dipped 10%; Lithuania produces around 6–7 million tons of grain annually, of which about 70–80% is exported, mostly via Klaipėda.

By market share among neighboring ports, Klaipėda holds 41%, followed by Riga at 17.5%, Tallinn at 14.6%, Ventspils at just over 9%, and Liepaja at a little over 7%.
