The Port of Maceió, located in the Jaraguá district, is operating without an environmental license issued by the Brazilian Institute of the Environment and Renewable Natural Resources (Ibama). The document is required under federal law.
According to the Federal Public Prosecutor’s Office (MPF-AL) in Alagoas, the Port of Maceió currently holds only a license issued by the Alagoas State Environmental Institute (IMA-AL), which violates federal legislation since licensing is a matter under federal jurisdiction.
Federal Prosecutor Érico Gomes issued a recommendation to both the Port Authority and IMA, requesting that they take the necessary steps to regularize the situation within 90 days.
The measure stems from a civil inquiry launched by the MPF to investigate the port’s operations without a valid environmental license from the competent authority.

Ibama has also initiated administrative proceedings and issued infraction notices due to the port’s potentially polluting activities, which occurred without a valid license, and for failing to respond to previous notifications.
“Compliance with environmental regulations is an essential condition for the responsible management of large-scale projects such as the Port of Maceió. Licensing must strictly follow legal jurisdiction, ensuring legal certainty, transparency, and environmental protection,” stated the author of the recommendation.
