The Port of Rotterdam has announced that Rozenburg Lock in Rotterdam, used by 20,000 vessels annually, is undergoing a major renovation.
From 2027, it will be operated remotely from the Rotterdam Traffic Center, marking a significant shift in port infrastructure management.

Vialis will carry out the next phase of work and handle long-term maintenance.

Port of Rotterdam COO Berte Simons and Vialis Managing Director Max Moerke signed the agreement this week.

The lock’s northern fender piles were already renovated in 2024.

The new phase covers the entire lock complex: the lock chamber, lock gates, bridges, control systems, buildings, and surrounding area. The lock will close for six months in 2026 for construction.

Until recently, the Port Authority employed 126 bridge and lock keepers. Many facilities are now managed by the State or Rotterdam municipality.

Today, the Rozenburg Lock is the only structure still operated directly by Port of Rotterdam Authority staff. In 1971, it became the first lock in the region operable by a single person.

After renovation, staff from the Harbour Master’s Division will operate the lock remotely from the Rotterdam Traffic Center. The lock connects the Calandkanaal and Hartelkanaal, and plays a key role in inland shipping.
