Port of Santos volumes increase by over 9.5 per cent

The Brazilian Port of Santos has handled a cargo of 38.7 million TEU in the first quarter of 2022, accounting for an increase of 9.6 per cent year on year.

The Santos Port Authority (SPA) has reported that nearly 30 per cent of all Brazilian cargo in Q1 2022 was handled by port.

Despite a slight reduction of 0.1 per cent in March, the overall performance was not compromised according to SPA. March still represented the second-best monthly result for the Port of Santos.

Exports accounted for 27.7 million tons while imports reached 10.9 million tons, registering increases of 11.3 per cent and 5.7 per cent year-on-year respectively.

“The growth in cargo handling in the first quarter, as well as the Port’s increase in the share of Brazilian trade, reinforce the need to accelerate investments in order to be ahead of demand, which grows well above GDP,” said the Director of Operations at SPA, Marcelo Ribeiro.

“With the package of auctions for areas that we have defined, we are on the right path to efficiently meet the needs of foreign trade, whose main infrastructure asset is in Santos.”

The Port of Santos reported significant growth in its container sector in 2021, hitting a record 4.8 million TEU.
