The port of Singapore is betting on ammonia to reduce CO2 emissions produced by ships during navigation. In a press release published recently, the Energy Market Authority and the Maritime and Port Authority of the city-state announced that they have established a consortium to continue studies on the development of nitrogen trihydride as an energy carrier for ship propulsion.

The goal of this consortium will be to create a preliminary design to allow Singapore to generate at least 100,000 tons of ammonia per year.

Singapore’s Keppel company will manage the ammonia power plant and Japan’s Sumitomo Corporation will supply the marine fuel. The Netherlands-based Advario will manage the storage terminal if a final decision on the investment is made in the future.
