THE port of Tianjin, a prominent port in China currently ranked ninth globally in container port rankings, has offered support in transforming the Port of Colombo into a green port, reports London’s Port Technology.
A delegation led by the chairman of the Tianjin Port visited the ministry’s office on April 29 to express their willingness to assist in this endeavour.
Recognising the importance of reducing carbon dioxide emissions, the Port of Tianjin has joined other major container ports worldwide in efforts to become a greener port.
This initiative aligns with scientific consensus regarding the role of CO2 emissions in climate change and its associated natural catastrophes.
The Sri Lanka Ports Authority (SLPA) has emphasized the need to prioritize using green ammonia to reduce reliance on fossil fuels, aiming to mitigate the environmental impact of port operations.
During discussions, the minister expressed gratitude for Tianjin Port’s support in transitioning the Port of Colombo to a green port.
He commended Tianjin Port for exporting the concept of green ports to other ports globally, leveraging China’s expertise in industrialisation and port management.
The delegation also expressed interest in supporting future enhancements at the Port of Galle and pledged full support for the development plans of the Colombo North Port.
In March, the Port of Colombo recorded a 29.1 per cent year-on-year increase in transshipments in February, marking continued growth for the third consecutive month.
