Yet another postponement due to infighting among government parties
Rome – The vote was scheduled for today, Tuesday the 22nd, starting at 1:45 PM, in Committee VIII of the Senate. It concerns ten presidents of the Port System Authorities. Preceding the vote was the hearing of nominees proposed by the Minister of Infrastructure and Transport, Matteo Salvini, in agreement with the presidents of the Lazio and Campania regions, for the ports of Civitavecchia and Salerno: Raffaele Latrofa and Eliseo Cuffaro.
However, the vote will not take place. At least for now. Once again, the official appointment of Italian port presidents has been postponed. Everything seemed resolved. The clash between Brothers of Italy and the League appeared to have been settled with their candidates securing Venice and Civitavecchia. Instead, last week in the Chamber’s Transport Committee, it was Forza Italia that blocked the nomination process over the issue related to Palermo, where the League proposed former MEP Annalisa Tardino, whom the regional president, Renato Schifani, refused to endorse.
Shipmag has learned that controversy has also erupted within FdI over the excessive activism of the Chamber’s Transport Committee president, Salvatore Deidda. The dispute has drawn in Galeazzo Bignami and Lucio Malan. In short, a sea of confusion and total confrontation within the government majority over the appointments of AdSP presidents. With a fine result, no doubt: ports will be discussed again in October, when parliamentary activity resumes. After all, there’s no hurry—hubs, shipping, and the blue economy can wait. And so can their problems. The division of spoils comes first.
