Propulsion selected for Indian battery-electric tugs

Integrated propulsion has been chosen for two battery-electric tugboats being built in India as part of the national green-tug shipbuilding strategy

KMEW Group is preparing to launch two hybrid-electric tugs it has builtto aNavnautikdesignas part ofIndia’s green-tug transitionprogramme(GTTP).

TheMumbai-headquarteredcompany is constructing these battery-electric tugs for India’s Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, with delivery scheduled for Q4 2027, subject to approval by the Indian Register of Shipping.

These 36-m tugboats will have lithium-titanium-oxide (LTO) batteries and two diesel generator sets installed for back-up, and a beam of11.6 m, a draught of 4.5m, andan expected bollard pull of 60tonnes.

Their delivery will be part of India’s strategy to build and deploy 50 green tugs across the nation’s major ports by 2030.
