Safety conditions have been restored, even though some containers still need to be recovered

Genoa – Clearance has been given for the departure of two of the three ships moored at the PSA Genoa Pra’ terminal and for the entry of two other vessels. The port of Pra’ is reopening this evening after the pause caused last Sunday by 19 containers falling from an MSC ship moored at the terminal into the sea, probably due to a sudden gust of wind. Loading and unloading operations have continued in recent days, but navigation had been temporarily banned by the Harbor Master’s Office, until safety conditions were restored. And today the ok was given. Four containers were recovered immediately; the others, which sank, have all been located and, although six still remain to be retrieved, which will probably be recovered tomorrow morning, the port has returned to normal.

“The terminal, in close and fruitful collaboration with the Harbor Master’s Office, the technical-nautical services, the divers, and Geco – informs PSA – has proceeded to locate the containers and recover most of them. The Harbor Master’s Office has authorized the unmooring of the ships CMA CGM Ambition and Hyundai Mars, currently at the dock, and the mooring of the ships CMA CGM Butterfly and Adrastos”. The MSC ship Mariagrazia, from which the containers had fallen, remains moored, but it will depart as soon as the last ones remaining on the seabed are also recovered.

“The loading and unloading operations of the ship involved have concluded in complete safety – adds the PSA note – The terminal continues to guarantee maximum collaboration with the competent authorities and to provide all necessary assistance for the completion of the recovery and verification activities”.

Meanwhile, the Geneva-based shipping company wanted to clarify that “the fall occurred during the ship’s loading and unloading activities: in no way is the incident attributable to MSC as the aforementioned activities are the exclusive competence, management, and responsibility of the terminal operator PSA”.
