MEASURES to promote British sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) will create skilled British jobs while ensuring air travel is fit for the future, said Transport Minister Mark Harper.

But Airlines UK chief executive Tim Alderslade sounded a cautionary note: ‘It is vital that government incentivise production and reduce the cost of SAF as seen in the EU and US, as quickly as possible.

‘Without this, the UK will be at a competitive disadvantage with consumers at risk of higher prices,’ Mr Alderslade said.

IAG chief Luis Gallego also warned that government must ‘incentivise the use of different types of waste, like sawdust and bark from forests, to tackle global issues such as deforestation, biodiversity and competition with food production – while placing a cap on fuel primarily made from cooking oil, which is the cheapest and most developed SAF pathway.’

Plans have been announced for an SAF mandate, requiring 10 per cent of all jet fuel to be eco-friendly by 2030, said the department’s communique.

‘The SAF industry is estimated to boost the economy by GBP1.8 billion (US$2.2 billion) and create more than 10,000 jobs across the UK by 2030,’ said the statement.

The SAF mandate, subject to parliamentary approval, comes into force in 2025, and will be one of the first in the world to be put into law.

‘The plans are good for aviation, the environment and for the UK overall with the SAF industry estimated to add over GBP1.8 billion (US$2.25 billion) to the economy and create over 10,000 jobs across the country,’ said the communique.?

Said Airport Operators Association CEO Karen Dee: ‘Sustainable aviation fuel is a key part of the decarbonisation of air travel and a domestic SAF industry will create jobs, wealth and help the UK secure its energy independence.’
